GCG Bogota moves forward with Lean Manufacturing & Kaizen Blitz Techniques

01 Nov 2016

Camilo Alvarez and participants

During the week of August 15, the Goddard Catering Group Lean Manufacturing team developed a Kaizen Blitz exercise in the kitchen of GCG Bogota in Colombia. For this occasion, the Lean Manufacturing team was comprised of Camilo Alvarez, GCG’s newly hired Lean Specialist for the Division, and Luisa Pardo, GCG Bogota’s local Chief of Planning, with the support of Eduardo Rozas, the Executive Chef from El Salvador, and Ivan Zentilli, GCG’s HACCP, Safety and Lean Manufacturing Manager for the Division, among several other local team members from other departments.

Working together, an average of 28% productivity improvement was achieved in the cold assembly area with some specific processes improving more than 40%! The Runner implementation and the Layout distribution were the two key activities in obtaining this outstanding result. A standardized work approach and consistent discipline, will now be the main drivers to sustain this improvement. It will become a daily routine, until the standards evolve to best practices that will be shared and replicated among all stations. There is still a lot to be done but the team is hungry for more!

Lean Manufacturing is a philosophy about making our operation efficient, responsive and stress free (or less stressful). It is a proven and flexible method to be more competitive and therefore better prepared to increase our market share participation.

Kaizen Blitz is a process improvement tool that allows us to achieve fast and continuous improvement. Using multidisciplinary teams, it allows ideas from all associates to be considered, assessed and implemented. The team leaders become change agents within their own teams.

The 5 S and 7 Wastes concepts, a place for everything and everything (must be) in its place”, added to the reduction of waiting times, distances, transportation, movements, etc., will become the base of the operations.

Many world class companies have successfully implemented Lean operations allowing them to continually grow at a faster pace with profitable operations, high quality standards and increased customers’ satisfaction.
