The 2016 Ecuador earthquake occurred on April 16th at 18:58:37 ECT with a magnitude of 7.8 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of VIII (Severe). The very large thrust earthquake was centered approximately 27 km (17 mi) from the towns of Muisne and Pedernales in a sparsely populated part of the country, and 170 km (110 mi) from the capital Quito where it was strongly felt. Regions of Manta, Pedernales and Portoviejo accounted for over 75 percent of total casualties. Manta’s central commercial shopping district Tarqui was completely destroyed. Widespread damage of structures was caused across Manabi province, hundreds of kilometres from the epicenter.
President Rafael Correa declared a state of emergency; 13,500 military personnel and police officers were dispatched for recovery operations.
The number of fatalities was estimated at several hundred within thirty minutes of the earthquake. By April 24th, the fatality count had reached 654, and 8,340 had been reported as injured.
Goddard Catering Group jointly launched plans for immediate action to assist the victims of the different areas affected by the earthquake and the Group also assisted flight operations with humanitarian aid.
Both company and employees gave their support by donating: beds, mattresses, nonperishable food, clothing and toys.
