On Saturday April 18, 2015 eight invited drivers and passengers in four Isuzu mu-x vehicles embarked on a round-the-island fuel economy trial, while also intending to experience the diverse road and traffic conditions that can make motoring in Grenada quite challenging at times.
Departing from the Kirani James Boulevard where the fuel tanks were filled up with low-sulfur diesel, progress was made up the east coast with diversions at Crochu harbour (Cabier) and Simon (By the Sea). Good time was made driving on through Pearls to Tivoli, with a detour to Bathway and back up through the picturesque village of Rose Hill, before rejoining the main road to Sauteurs. The drive down the west coast was slowed by a wedding procession from Victoria to Maran, but after leaving Gouyave traffic was light and the Mabouya shortcut was entertaining to traverse.
Returning to the start, the four fuel tanks were filled again, requiring 2.43, 2.46, 2.90 and 2.92 gallons respectively, each vehicle having driven 65.6 miles. The drivers were effusive in complimenting the air-conditioned comfort, handling, and overall ease of driving the mu-x while listening to the superb Isuzu sound system.
Then came the announcement that the most fuel efficient driver had recorded consumption of 27miles per gallon on the round-the-island trip - a remarkable performance!
