Mr. Stewart Massiah, Divisional General Manager of the Goddard Catering Group said: “When the volume of airline catering dropped after Sept 11th 2001, we reacted proactively by diversifying our catering business into other areas such as Industrial Catering, Event Catering and Ground Handling - where we provide a one-stop-shop for the major airlines, managing and operating their check-in procedures, loading of bags, everything. The end result is that we now generate some 36% of our revenue from the non-airline catering business”.
In 2009, the Group established GCG Ground Services which provides a full suite of ground handling services to aircraft both above and below the wing in St Thomas in the USVI and at both Norman Manley and Sangster International Airports in Jamaica. GCG Ground Services currently handles over 12,000 flights annually and employees 500 staff.
Subsidiary company, GCG Events (the Event Catering business) which provided the complete catering service for the 60th Anniversary event, was launched in 2008 in Barbados following the knowledge and experience gained from being the Official Caterer for the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2007 across nine countries of the Caribbean.
Since then, the GCG Group has been quietly building up its capability and capacity and currently the GCG Events brand operates in six countries of the Caribbean and Latin America. The intention is to grow this brand across the region in which GCG operates and to become a one stop option for quality Event Catering. This venture is quite different from the airline catering business as it is more in the public domain, and has been a learning curve for the teams who have been hard at work developing its offerings and service standards.
“We believe that the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Catering Division was the ideal time to showcase the GCG Events brand and suite of services to the Barbados market despite the fact that many of you in the room are already loyal clients”, Mr. Massiah said.
He added: “We learned a lot from the experience of catering for the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2007. Since then, we have catered a number of world-class events, such as the Top Gear Festival in Barbados in 2014. Our attitude is to ‘have a go and do it right’. We are building for the future, establishing GCG Events as the first choice VIP Caterers for big events. And we aim to replicate that brand throughout the Caribbean and Latin America”.
