On September 5th, 2014 the M&C Group of Companies proudly celebrated its 150th Anniversary, and as part of the Group’s anniversary celebrations, one of the initiatives launched was the M&C Art Competition 2014. The Art Competition, which ran from September 22nd to October 24th, launched under the theme: “M&C St. Lisie and Me,” and was opened to all primary and secondary schools island wide.
The competition officially came to a close on Friday 5th December with a special prize-giving ceremony, awarding the achievement of thirteen winning students. Art Pieces were judged in the following categories: Primary students- Grades 1-3 and 4-6; Secondary students- Forms 1-3 and 4-5 and under the following criteria: creativity, presentation, and theme foundation. Winners were chosen by an independent panel of judges namely Mrs. Alcina Nolley, Mr. Ken Lawrence, and Ms. Nancy Cole Auguste.
The M&C 2014 Art Competition Winners were:
Grades 1 to 3: Erin Charles (1st place) and Dayana Sleiman (2nd place) both of Montessori Centre; Jazmyn Faucher (3rd place) of Ave Maria Primary School
Grades 4 to 6: Elizabeth Kabiye (1st place) and Jaydon Devaux (2nd place) both of Montessori Centre; Iyanna Seale (3rd place) of Les Etangs Combined
Forms 1 to 3: Kaela Albert (1st place) of International School; Diaz King (2nd place) of Beanefield Comprehensive, Vieux Fort; Chessie Dupres (3rd place) of Vide Bouteille Secondary
Forms 4 to 5: Elijah Weekes (1st place) of Babonneau Secondary; Natalie Sidonie (2nd place) of St. Joseph’s Convent; Lizann Henry of George Charles Secondary School and Melcady James of Anse Ger Secondary School (tie in 3rd place).
Each 1st place winner received a 7" Tablet. The 2nd and 3rd place winners in the Grades 1 to 3 categories received a G-Shock watch and art set respectively. In all other categories the 2nd and 3rd place winners received cell phones and G-shock watches respectively. The winning works of art will also be featured in the M&C 2015 calendar.
M&C Group of Companies, a subsidiary of Goddard Enterprises Limited, has had a history over the past 35 years of supporting and developing the Arts in St. Lucia. According to the CEO of the Group, Mr. Johnathan Powell, “The Company’s founding partners recognized that a business is part of the community and, as such, it should always seek to contribute more to the society in which it operates.”
Company officials also stated this involvement began through the M&C Fine Arts Awards in 1979 and will continue through initiatives like this Art Competition and other initiatives for years to come.
